Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT?

Jay Gibbons signed in a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and is on his way to their Double A affililate in Nashville.

If all goes well, he'll be moved up to Triple A in a couple of weeks and then, if he produces, could end up sitting on the bench for the Milwaukee Brewers and waiting for a turn to pinch hit.

At least I assume he'll pinch hit. Maybe the Brewers plan to pull a reverse Rick Ankiel/Adam Loewen and turn Gibbons into a middle reliever.

God knows they can't allow him to play the outfield or first base. I mean they could, but that would only be the DUMBEST MOVE IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL!

I'm glad some of us are getting all misty thinking about Gibbons getting a much deserved second chance in MLB. Because "gee, after all he did apologize for that little HGH incident and he's a really nice guy who did SO much for the community when he was here in Baltimore. Just a kind hearted soul caught up with the wrong crowd".

Plus he's willing to donate his minor league salary to charity.

Great! I don't care if that miscreant donated both kidneys, his liver, his lungs, his batting eye (of course he really doesn't need THAT, does he?), and his spleen. There is NO WAY JAY GIBBONS SHOULD BE IN BASEBALL WHILE BARRY BONDS WAITS FOR A CHANCE!

None. Zero. It's insane...

I said it last night on our show and I'll say it again- Jay Gibbons (and guys like him) have done more damage to baseball than Barry Bonds ever did.

Gibbons is still getting paid 8 million dollars a year (gee, haven't heard him talk about donating that) by the Orioles. His use of performance enhancing drugs led to inflated numbers and locked up money which could've been used for much better purposes by the organization- like maybe a shortstop. Who knows?

Sure, Flanagan and the rest of the O's front office have to take some of the blame for forking over that kind of dough to a guy who has less fielding skills than Carmen Elektra displayed in the MTV celebrity all-star softball game and whose track record as a power hitter wasn't exactly proven. But Gibbons is the poster child for the steroid era. More so than Bonds.

Let's say Barry Bonds DID use steroids. Or HGH... Or iguana bile. Without the additives, he'd still be the best player of his generation and STILL command one of the highest contracts in the league.

Bonds use of performancing enhancing drugs turned the best player in all of a baseball into, um, the best player in all of baseball. He went from superstar to super human.

Gibbons, on the other hand, went from a marginal player to a decent one and then, after the drugs wore off, a less than marginal player. A lot of players did the same thing- many of them named in the Mitchell Report. If you want to know why run production went up and team home run numbers exploded, look to the Gibbons' of the world and not the Bonds'.

Last year- post steroids- while Jay Gibbons watched more fly balls bounce off his head than go over the fence, Bonds hit 28 home runs in 340 at bats and finished the season with a .565 slugging percentage.

Yet, Jay Gibbons gets the second chance.

The only way Jay Gibbons should be allowed back onto a Major League field is ten years from now when the Orioles do a "Idiots Who Stunk" night at Camden Yards.

The greatest home run hitter of all time is willing to play for the league minimum and no team will touch him? Hmm.

But there's no collusion, right?

And we're sure there's no racism, right?

I'm not so sure.

Bonds and his agent made it pretty clear that Bonds will NOT sign a minor league deal or play in the minor leagues. Gibbons is going to play at AA and AAA, with a longshot to sit on Milwaukee's bench in September and occasionally pinch hit for a pitcher.

First of all, it would be nice if you got your facts straight. Jay Gibbons signed with the Double A affiliate in Huntsville, Alabama. If he gets prmoted to Triple A, then he'll be playing in Nashville. Great attention to details guys.

Secondly, Jay Gibbons should be back before Bonds. At last check, Gibbons was not hated by every teammate past and present, isn't a clubhouse cancer and most importantly doesn't have an indictment with 15 felony counts hanging over his head. Collusion? No, I just think common sense.

I 100% agree with you.. Bonds have the eye in the game of baseball of his era... He could easy come to a american league team and have batting average over .300 hit you around 30 hr(my guess around 35) and have a on base percent over .500.. with hgh... how many team can use that.. and he on record saying he will do it for the league min.. Gibbons on hgh could not do that... Look at the line up his had with the giants and the problem he face with his knee playing the outfield..he stat was still all star number.. imagine him not playing the outfield with a line up...
I would have no problem with Bonds staying home if he was the only fromer hgh player that is staying home...but it is hard for me to see baseball black ball Bonds and Bonds only.. the man can hit the baseball and he ability to see the baseball is something that fans should take note of and love to see it happen again...

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By Jeff on 7/24/2008 5:55 PM

I definitely agree. Barry Bonds should be in baseball period. Jay Gibbons on the other hand should not. He can't hit, can't field, can't throw, is injury-prone, and doesn't even want to be a DH. He just plain SUCKS! I can't believe Jay Gibbons is back in baseball before Barry Bonds. WOW..he will definitely sell out the stadium now since he is on the Brewers...NOT! Another thing is that I read that the GM swore that he didn't read the Mitchell report and never knew that he was in there. That is the biggest load of bull I have ever heard of in my life. It makes me upset that teams are going after garbage players like Gibbons instead of a man who can definitely help your team right away. Just boggles my mind.

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By Kevin (Dundalk) on 7/24/2008 5:56 PM

At this point any team who signed Bonds would be deluged with media and hype, and even if he isn't the jerk everyone thinks he is the distraction would keep any contending team out of the playoffs. He will get back into the big leagues about the same time as Gibbons does though....there is much racism in sports (some of the KOBS results are an example), but this isn't. Now if Roger Clemmens gets a contract.....

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By hal in annapolis on 7/24/2008 6:00 PM

guys its bad enough that your show is garbage...now youre ripping off your own bloggers and not even getting your facts right...the aa affiliate is in alabama, not nashville...once again, top notch work from the ungers (EDITED BY MARC- Pretty sure we talked about this on our show LAST NIGHT. Also, each blogger brings his own take and style to a situation. As for Nashville vs. Huntsville, having been to both places- who cares? Finally, I appreciate you listening to that garbage show ALL THE WAY in Annapolis. )

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By GQ on 7/24/2008 5:57 PM

Marc; Calm down and let me play Devil's Advocate. First off, the O's are paying him $11.9 million over the next TWO years. Secondly, I could be wrong but I don't hear Barry Bonds complaining? Maybe because he refuses to play for anyone for less than... say $5 million?! Don't get me wrong. Gibbons is no altar boy, but this is America... if the Brewers are stupid enough not to realize that without ROIDS, Gibbons is worthless, then they get what they deserve. Even on ROIDS Gibbons was horrible as a pinch-hitter in his career... so the Brewers move is even more mind-boggling! Have Phil look it up.

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By OrioleFan on 7/24/2008 10:36 PM

As a pure fan of the game, I got to see Barry Bonds play in Pittsburgh last year against the Pirates in PNC bank stadium. He is a joy to watch, regardless of your position on steroids, etc.

I personally don't care if the players take steroids, because it is their body, and they are the ones taking the risk. Barry Bonds was a great hitter before and still would be a hall of famer even if he never touched the drugs. I just think this is a huge marketing oversight on the part of baseball, that the all time home run leader is out of the game and can't find a job.

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By Jason Jubb - the Sunday Morning Blitz 10am-noon on 7/25/2008 3:33 PM

He's not out of the game based on performance. It's his attitude and persona that outweights the on field benefits. For example if he comes to Baltimore and what does he show Adam Jones. If Bonds grounds out and lazily jogs to first what does Trembley do? If he does nothing it sets a bad example yet if he jumps on Bonds and he tells Trembley to F off, then what? It's his past that is finally catching up with him.

Re: Gibbons and NO Bonds? WHAAAT? By Flint on 7/26/2008 8:49 AM

With his baseball skills, Jay Gibbons should have to buy a ticket to get into a major league stadium.
