O's PR Screws Up Another One!!
Location: BlogsBlogsLonnie Nelson's Blog
Posted by: Lonnie Nelson 7/24/2008 10:12 AM

Last night I got to witness a Madhouse @ Camden Yards 1st hand as the O's PR Department tried to do something nice for the fans and it backed fired as usual!!

The 83 O's Celebration seemed to be getting off on the right foot when we were coming through the gates. We could see a couple of players at each gate meeting and greeting the fans and signing autograph's for the fans. Then as usual the O's PR ladies decided to stop the players from signing any autograph's for the fans. Telling everyone that the players would be signing autograph's at 7:15 near gate D.

We all went up and got into line and waited for nearly 2 hours for the players to show up. By this time the line from from gate D all the way to the Warehouse. At some point in time the PR Department should have figured out they had a problem and looked for a solution. But as they always do their wonderful attitude started to kick in.

I stayed around to see the outcome of the craziness that was starting to unfold. At 8:00 there was still a line down to almost the warehouse and the PR people finally realized they had a problem. Some of them went down to the line telling people that they probally would not be able to the players due to the time. Then it started with the fans starting to yell and scream at the PR people who were behind the tables.

Now I know from experience in doing these types of shows that the PR people were in a no win situation. If only they had planned the event some what better it could have solved alot of the problems and the upset fans. For example: The PR people should have not stopped the players from signing at the gates; most of the players wanted to sign for the fans.

2nd the PR Department should have the event setup more planned out. If they would have split up the area where the players were signing it might have cut down on the line.

3rd If the PR Department would have told everyone who was going to be at the table alot of people would have left the line. From listening to the people in line they thought that the whole team was up there at the table signing. Now we all know that was not going to happen!! Mr. Ripken is not going to sign for free and for all the people that were there last night. Palmer was working. Eddie is also not going to sign for all those people.

I was a little surprised who of the other players that did not come down from the suites to sign for the fans. Dempsey, McGregor, Boddicker and Flanagan.

I heard more then one person say later that night that some one had stolen their pennants that they had signed. I know that one old lady is happy today with the Eddie Murray and Al Bumbry signed pennants that she picked up and walked out with as someone was yelling to her that the pennants were theirs!!

One guy from the PR Department tried to save the event at the end by gathering up all the cards that the players had signed and had not given out. He started to give one card out to everyone who was still in line as long as he had cards. Atleast he made some of the fans happy.

Last night's event was no different then the events that the O's PR do with ESPN Zone or Chick-Fil-A; no organization or planning. Someone has to teach these people that there is more to a event then just showing up and say the line starts here!!

Wow...I'm shocked...another O's PR blunder...go figure...

I agree with your points, but why the jab at Cal? He is known for his willingness to sign autographs for a long period of time, for FREE.

Scott McGregor was at the Champions Cafe, (which had a much smaller line) and he stood with my family while MASN took a picture of us with the 83 WS trophy. He was very gracious, and signed our pennants and a baseball. I saw him sign everything that people would give him, and he engaged in small talk with everyone as well. Gary Roenicke was there for awhile, then left. While I'm not an Oriole PR apologist by any means, let's give them credit for taking steps in the right direction. Just two short years ago, they didnt bother to recognize the 66 WS champs.

wow...I'm shocked...someone from 'nst ripping the O's...
Lonnie, you appear to be someone who has attended a free autograph signing or two and knows they can be a complete mess (God help me but at this point in my life I would rather pay for the signature - it's organized and sane) - everyone thinks they are entitled to Cal & Eddie's signature (as you correctly point out - they're not signing for everyone for free any more), many like to use their kids (who in most cases couldn't care less and have no idea who Jim Dwyer is much less want his autograph) and most people want to use their time to bond with the athelete and talk about the time they met Todd Cruz at the Giant - these stories take up way too much time and slow the line down. Yes, I agree that I'm amazed how poorly these signing events are handled - you figured they would learn by now. But you know that having players from the '83 team may draw a crowd so I think it was buyer (or in this case, dude standing in line for free signatures) beware.
I was in the very front of the line with my son who is 3 and my friends two young kids. I agree and would much rather pay for the autograph and have a nicer signature. I am just stating that the event the O's tried to put on last night could have been handled alot better.

ReO's PR Screws Up Another One!! By JOHN FROM HIGHLAND TOWN on 7/24/2008 3:20 PM

I DON'T THINK THAT ANY THING CAN SAVE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VERY INTENCE AND PROUD FANS OF BALTIMORE,
AND THE FRONT OFFICE.TO LONG AND WAY TO MANY BAD THINGS GONE WRONG TO SAVE IT. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO GIVE THE FAN'S WHAT THEY WHANT?THERE IS SO MUCH WE CAN DO AS FANS TO KEEP THE TEAM GOING ON AND THE HISTORY ALIVE ,BUT WE NEED THER HELP TO . AND THAT DOES NOT MEEN JUST THE TEAM'S CAL IS APART OF.

Grow up...adults make choices. By Chris on 7/24/2008 3:34 PM

so, let's get this right...you bought your $5.50 ticket, paid your parking and entered the park, where you got a free pennant limited to 25,000 only to find out that you had a choice to stand in line or not to wait for autographs that were on a time limit with no published lineup of players signing.

Hmmm....so adults made a choice and because the Orioles didn't give them each one minute with Murray, Palmer and Ripken they are bad. Was it poor planning...yes...they simply shouldn't have done an autograph signing. Is the attitude of grown adults worse...absolutely.

I'll admit to reading your stations website from time to time and very much enjoy Bob Haynie in the middle of the day, but this garbage of bashing the O's has to stop. It's getting ridiculous. I'm sure your blog about the Ravens who dared leave the practice field before every person had been pleased is sure to follow.
If the Orioles published a blog about every screw up the radio station has, and then sent people to yell at the interns I'm sure you'd have a better appreciation. I am not trying to bash the O's!! I am just reporting on what I saw. Being involved with several charity organizations and with many years of experience in these types of events I'm just saying it could have been done alot better!!

Re: O's PR Screws Up Another One!! By Sobo Bob on 7/24/2008 3:35 PM

Chris,

The NST signal doesn't reach the warehouse, so I doubt the O's would be able to listen to the station to identify said screwups. As long as the Ravens roadtrips sell out and Nestor gets his press passes, all is well at NST. My college radio station had a better signal.

Re: O's PR Screws Up Another One!! By Alex Thomas on 7/24/2008 3:50 PM

You know how you guys get sick of hearing people at NST "bash the O's" (your words, not mine...)? Sobo Bob and Chris, you're doing the EXACT SAME THING you accuse others of...if you hate the station so much then stop commenting. And if you had a clue about how radio works, you would understand that the reason why the signal doesn't stretch past balt. county is because of the FCC, not because of WNST. It's not Nestor's or anyone else fault. The FCC has to protect it's stations from bleeding over. There are stations in columbia, delaware, and philly that have frequencies that are close to AM 1570. The reason why the signal cuts out is because of frequency protection...so stop making uneducated comments and buy a freakin' clue.

Re: O's PR Screws Up Another One!! By Sobo Bob on 7/24/2008 4:50 PM

Sir Alex,

I have a clue about how radio works, I hosted a sports talk radio show in college. As for the signal, the interference with our stations just means that the signal did not cost as much, that's all. I'd like to know how Hennessey and Nestor spin their ratings and webclicks data to potential advertisers. Given the appearence of this website, they have to be running some kind of a scam.
