Ravens Q&A time
Location: BlogsBlogsCasey Willett's Blog
Posted by: Casey Willett 7/24/2008 5:55 AM
With today being a day at training camp that is off limits to fans and media, I thought this would be an opportunity for readers to submit questions and I will answer them as they regard the Ravens. This again will be a weekly and sometimes twice a week blog I will have here on the website.

Here are a couple of notes from late yesterday evening:

- Willis McGahee appeared to be in better shape than what he was when he was in town for the mandatory camps.

- Chris McAlister may be the happiest guy to be back at camp. Chris was smiling and joking with the media about how much he loves us, saying hello to everyone that works for the Ravens or the Best Western that was within 100 feet of him.

- Ray Lewis was wearing a new shirt he came up with. Ray usually has shirts that say Team 52 on the front. In the past on the back slogans such as Prayed up have been on there. Yesterday it said T52 on the front and Heart of a Lion on the back.

- As was predicted and I wrote last week, Terrell Suggs did not report to camp yesterday.

- Although it is called an Administrative Day today, the Ravens will have meetings most of the morning than a practice this afternoon. Reminder today is closed to the media.

- People at S.A.F.E. might want to learn what Ravens coaches and players look like. I can not count the amount of times over the last two days that coaches, players, and even veterans reporting have complained about getting interrogated by the security at the team hotel. The fact that someone had to verify John Harbaugh was the coach to let him into the hotel is crazy. Several of the coaches either walk or run from practice back to hotel and a couple of gotten stopped by security asking them for identification.

- John Harbaugh is so much about the team and not letting one person have the spot light, I wonder if he will allow the usual King Ugly contest to take place this year?

- Tomorrow morning will be the first time fans and media will get a chance to see the entire 2008 Ravens team on the field at 8:45 a.m. Of course Terrell Suggs will not be there as well as Samari Rolle as he prepares for his fathers funeral.

- It was funny yesterday to see several of the defensive veteran players walk in and run into Dan Cody and ask him what the practices have been like and have then been hitting and trying to get the details on what to expect. They were reminded that there was only 25 players there so there was not a lot that they could do.

-
- If I was taking a prediction, I think Dan Wilcox and Demetrius Williams, both start out on the physically unable to perform list (p.u.p.). I don’t think they will stay on it long, but it will allow them a week or so to recover to get back onto the field.

So fire away with any questions you might have.

Any buzz on whether Suggs is pissed a bit or just doing what some veterans do ?
(EDIT: Suggs is just doing what most franchise players do. They feel the team is not committed to him long term, so why should he commit extra time to them...and the Ravens understand that)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Joe of Bel Air on 7/24/2008 7:10 AM

Casey, speaking of Dan Cody, assuming he finally stays healthy for the entire year, what do you see his role being with the Ravens; linebacker, situational pass rusher or special teams member? Also I am very intrigued by Jameel McMlain as a linbacker candidate. What are your early impressions of him as an inside linebacker candidate. What do you see as his chances of making the team?(EDIT: Dan is going to be a 3rd down pass rush defensive end more than a linebacker, although he will play some there. McClain is impressive, but he will have guys like Nick Grieson, Brendon Ayanbadejo, Gary Stills, Tavares Gooden, Edgar Jones, Jarrett Johnson, not to mention Ray, Bart, and Suggs all in front of him........He could be a practice squad candidate)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Jeff on 7/24/2008 7:11 AM

Do you think that T-Sizzle will get his brand new contract before the start of the season or will he just sign his franchise tag?(EDIT: The date already passed for the Ravens to sign him to a new deal. They now will have to wait till the end of the season to negotiate with him)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By FRANCHISE on 7/24/2008 7:13 AM

Casey,

What was Todd Heap doing on the field early with rookies and free-agents and injured veterans???....I know he was injured last year but was it for Ozzie to see his conditioning and then pull him off the field???(EDIT : Todd was out there with his position coach Wade Harman yesterday. He was just out there to get some work in before the team had practice. Read nothing into him and Ozzie walking off the field together, they just were walking and having a conversation. Todd is fine and was at the hotel a little bit later)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Jeff on 7/24/2008 7:14 AM

What do you think Ray Rice's role will be this year? Do you think he could be a third down back this year or will his impact only be felt on special teams? (EDIT: I think Ray will get some carries on 3rd down, but he is not going to even come close to splitting carries with Willis. Ray has been fielding punts during the last two days.)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Mike on 7/24/2008 3:35 PM

If we put Wilcox and Williams on the PUP, can we sign anyone to take their place until they come back, or do they count against the 80 man limit?(EDIT: Does count on the roster until you get to 75 players (8/26). After that, you have to declare on roster, PUP (eligible to return after 6th week in regular season), or place on IR (or PUP-reserved, which puts player out for season).

.)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Scott in Florida on 7/24/2008 8:23 AM

Are they looking to get Yamon Figurs involved with the offense more this year? I haven't heard anything about him.
(EDIT: The problem with Yamon is that he can run routes and has amazing speed, but the one thing you need as a reciever is to catch the ball and he has struggled in that. I don't think you will see him much out as a WR)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By RavenFan on 7/24/2008 9:16 AM

Who will be the ultimate decision maker as to who becomes the starting QB on opening day? Will this be John Harbaugh's decision exclusively, or will the owner be involved in it?

Also, if Kyle Boller outperforms both Smith and Flacco, do you really think they will start him? It seems to me as though he is in a lame duck position.(EDIT: I think it will be John Harbaugh with a huge chunk out input from Cam Cameron. I think Troy will be the guy to start the season. If I was saying right now, I would say Troy, Kyle, Joe)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By ejhurte on 7/24/2008 9:18 AM

Casey, I know it is still early but who some of the new WR's that have been impressive during the young camp? Based on the past couple of days has anyone stood out more than others?(EDIT: It is to early to say, because the WR's have been going up against coaches acting as DB's. Although Patrick Carter, Marcus Smith, and Justin Harper, have all had some good catches and practices. I want to see how they do against C-mac, Landry, Reed, and others in the secondary)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By KZ on 7/24/2008 11:14 AM

Casey...seriously...If Kyke does not win the starting job and is outplayed by Joe and Troy...would the Ravens think about adding a better VET QB to help these guys...I am not sure Kyle can do that as a number 3 QB on this team...

(EDIT: Kyle will stick around as the number 2 this year)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Nundrum on 7/24/2008 11:16 AM

While you were ticking off names of ILB candidates, I noticed you didn't mention Prescott Burgess. When we drafted him, I thought he might be the future at that position. What is his future with the club, and what are the chances he won't even be with the team come opening day?(EDIT: that was slip on my part...however he has a up hill batlle. He has to prove he is healthy and much like several other LB's he will have Griesen, Ayanbadejo, Gooden, Johnson, Scott, Ray,among others in front of him)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Craig Peters on 7/24/2008 11:17 AM

Casey,

Who will take the first-team snaps tomorrow? Also, have you seen the real raven birds at practice. Will they be there at all during camp?(EDIT: Right now I would think Kyle will take the first reps tomorrow. I have not seen the real birds at camp yet, or heard that they are coming to camp. I will check into when they will be appearing though)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By JOHN FROM HIGHLANDTOWN on 7/24/2008 3:33 PM

NOW THAT WE KNOW THE PLAYERS ON THE O.L ARE GOING TO BE ,FOR THE MOST PART, WHAT Q.B BETTER FITS THERE STLYE OF PLAY?(EDIT: I still think Troy Smith is the guy to start the season)

Re: Ravens Q&A time By Jay From Baldwin on 7/24/2008 6:21 PM

Case, In the past clock management and untimely timeouts were a serious problem do yo think the new coaches are aware of how bad it was, hopefully they can stop
