The Ravens' QB Talk

The signing of Joe Flacco starts talks of, "Who's gonna start at quarterback for the Ravens?"

Flacco's confidence in his ability may cause the right kind of problems for the team. He seems to believe that he has what it takes to take over for the Ravens.

The question has been Boller or Smith for so long, that we haven't seriously taken into consideration whether or not Flacco may beat both of those guys out. If so, does he start?

Many Ravens' fans would say "no" to that because of the way Kyle Boller's career has gone since he was handed the starting job as a rookie. The fear is that Flacco would be ruined under the pressure of learning how to be an NFL quarterback, on the field.

It's been done before. There have been rookie quarterbacks who've turned out well after playing as rookies. We can't allow fear of what happened with Boller dictate what's best for Flacco and the current Baltimore Ravens. Maybe, Boller was a bad fit and that's what happened. Maybe Boller starting as a rookie has nothing to do with where his progression stands.

I hope the coaching staff evaluates the quarterbacks on what happens in camp, and not on preconceived notions. If Flacco looks better than Smith and Boller, let him play. If not, sit him and let him learn.

By the way, Joe Flacco will be on the show today during the 3:00 hour. Happy Chicken Box Friday.

Maybe the fans booing Boller 3 weeks into his career or cheering when he got hurt in his 3rd season had something to do with his progress or lack of it. Maybe the fact that he was given WR corps that consisted of Frank Sanders, Marcus Robinson, and Travis "No Hands" Taylor and asked to play behind such "great" O-lineman as Orlando Brown, Bennie Anderson, and the ever-overated Mike Flynn. Either way, I'd rather be walking in as Flacco with Mason, Clayton, and Williams at WR and a young developing line of Grubbs, Yanda, Jason Brown, etc. and the expectations considerably lower here in Baltimore than they were in 2003 when KB got the starting job. Another thing I never agreed with (here or in other cities) is when you hear everyone say "if he could just manage the game and not make mistakes" the defense could win it. That's the last state of mind I'd want my QB in, QBs are supposed to have a short memory and not be afraid to make a mistake and above it all, a drive to win the damn game. I don't want a QB that tries "not to lose" and is afraid of taking a chance because it might lead to a mistake. I think when coaches start telling a young QB that it's the quickest way to ruin him....

Rob,

Well said and a point well taken when comparing Boller versus Flacco as a rookie starter. However, do you think the progression of the offensive line to protect the starting QB should also be a consideration of the coaching staff to determine the week #1 starter????......You may get the feeling that I am referring to mobility and leaning toward Smith----However, when I have watched Flacco play he has the gift to ellude tacklers with his big 6"6" frame and with his foot speed (see combine time in the 40 @ 4.58 seconds)----Overall, I am just thankful he's at Camp on time with the signing of his deal looking to compete for the starting job----No holdout with this Italo-American Blue Hen and Italo-American Agent for his Italo-American Owner!!!!

Re: The Ravens' QB Talk By the "Armchair" QB on 7/20/2008 11:02 PM

Interesting early QB contoversy. The fact is, it wasn't starting Boller prematurely that was his undoing as much as it was and continues to be his lack of pocket presence, poise and accuracy! Troy Smith demonstrated last year in his brief appearances that he has those essential ingredients, so I'd be comfortable with him as the starter early on. That being said, if Flacco, too, has those instinctive, innate QB success traits, I wouldn't hesitate to move him into the starting role if Smith falters. As for Boller, other than experience as a starter, he is clearly not the answer and should be considered trade "bait" if, in fact, any team would "bite"!

We WILL see Flacco this year. Not because a rookie is that ready, but because Boller and Smith STINK.
