Should Terry Francona have called Dave Trembley?
Location: BlogsBlogsCasey Willett's Blog

So there are some people here at Camden Yards who think that Terry Francona should've called Dave Trembley and explained to him why he used George Sherrill the way he did in the All Star Game on Tuesday night night in New York.

So should he have also sent him a box of chocolates and a virtual hug along with that apology?

Francona does not owe Trembley any explanation as to why he used Sherrill the way he did. Francona was trying to win a game that probably will benefit him the most when it comes time for the World Series in October.

Here is the interesting fact: Franconia actually called Andy McPhail and explained the situation to him but did not and has not tried to call Dave Trembley.

If anything, maybe Francona showed that Sherrill can be used for more than one inning.

Francona did what any other manager would've done -- he tried to win the game because his team might need home field advantage three months from now.

To think that Francona was sitting in the dugout thinking and plotting on how he could use up George Sherrill and Scott Kazmir of the Rays so that it will be benefit the Red Sox down the road is one of the most stupid things I have ever heard.

I think it is far more interesting as to why Terry Francona called Andy McPhail and not Dave Trembley.

I think you guys in the pressbox should stick to the buffet and stop wondering about useless stuff. Francona only had 1 other pitcher and he didn't want to use him. Why would he care what a last place team thinks? What like we need Sherrill for Oct? As for pitching him more than one inning with the O's, aren't you the same clowns who keep talking about how Trembley is overusing him now he's not using him enough??? Get your stories straight fishhacks and then maybe you'll understand why the newspaper industry is dying.
(EDIT: Just for the record Eric, I think even asking the question was silly, and I do not work for a newspaper. I agree with you)

This is a not a story Casey. Why does NST Crush only the Orioles anyway? It gave Billick free passes over the hoorible Kyle Boller and numerous players that could not stay out of trouble.Truth be told Billick would have been a good coach at THE U. As for the WE ONLY COVER BALTIMORE SPORTS slogan. WHY TALK ABOUT THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS?
(EDIT: I don't see how this is crushing the Orioles. It was something Trembley was asked about today that I think is silly topic. As far as Billick and Kyle Boller, I do not see how they compare to Trembley and Francona. Not sure what you are talking about with the Washington Caps)

Casey, I think the responses on this blog proves that this site has some of the least educated people I have come across. I get your point. Was it a slap to Trembley? Maybe, but we don't know the whole story. Maybe Francona has a relationship with MacPhail that we are not aware of and felt more comfortable talking to him. Maybe Trembley and Francona have had an on-the-field issue and don't see eye-to-eye. Nonetheless, I don't think anything was done intentionally harmful to the Orioles on the part of Francona. If the game only went 9 innings, and Sherrill was not used, then we would be whining about that. The issue is MLB, and this stupid format for letting the winner have home-field in the WS. I'm glad we used our closer 2 1/3 innings so the Red Sox, Yankees, or Angels can have homefield in the WS. That's the real issue.

I think all this pampering of pitchers is a load of crap. This is a big league pitcher for God sake!!! How in the world anyone can suggest that a big league pitcher is unable to pitch 2 1/3 innings is beyond me. And if he does, he will be ruined for the rest of the season. I understand that Sherrill cannot go out night after night without wearing down. But that goes to another issue, why are the starters unable to go beyond the 7th inning or a certain pitch count. Maybe the reason they are tired is because they are fat and out of shape. Maybe if they pitched a full game every now and then they would have the stamina to finish.
