Parker vs. Ogden

I'm really surprised by the early results of the Parker/Ogden, head-to-head match-up. As of 4pm, Ogden had received 60% of the votes. While Ogden is, arguably, the greatest who's ever played the position, so is Parker.

Is this a result of inactivity in the voting community? If so, that's surprising as well. This was our opportunity to make some noice in showing everyone what kind of sports tradition Baltimore has.

Some of the greatest athletes who ever played came through Baltimore and these two are among the greatest.

I would bet that the average listener did not see Mr. Parker play. You would have to be 60 something to remember Mr. Parker play. I am in my early 50's and the only time I saw him was at his package goods store. I have to think your audience is rather young and 100% Ravens. Also the position OL with no stats makes it hard to determine who is better a HOF or a future HOF. The contest is interesting and fun but by all means do not base the inactivity as a barometer regarding our sports tradition. By being able to check the past stars stats and rekindling the memory is something special. Keep up the great conversations as that is what this should be all about. Thanks for stimulating us to remember our great tradition.

Voting inactivity is not surprising due to the seemingly free ride to the finals for Ripken , what a weak bracket , are you kidding me ?
Re: Parker vs. Ogden By The "Armchair" QB on 7/15/2008 8:30 AM

As one who has had the privilege to watch both play, my vote goes to Parker. Not to take anything away from J.O., who's a sure Hall of Famer, Parker played in an era when "O" linemen were prohibited from using their hands to block and was a perinnial unanimous All Pro tackle until asked to switch to guard at which time he became a perennial unanimous All Pro guard! That's probably unparalleled in the history of professional football and sets him apart from all other "O" linemen, past or present! Simply put, Parker is the greatest "O" lineman in the history of the game!

Rob,

Jim Parker #77 transcended the LT position in the NFL, let alone in Baltimore>>>>I too had the priviledge to watch both Parker and Ogden play>>>>While both are great HOF LT's, the difference is that Parker drafted from OSU (See Woody Hayes' quotes in Johnny Unitas' book by Callahan) broke the mold in the NFL on the proto-typical LT in an era when Offensive Lineman were NOT permitted to use their hands like they push with today for both run and pass blocking. OL were required to keep their hands inside their pads and never could extend with palms out like they can today. All the more reason to give offensive records today an asterisk because of the time given QB's to throw the ball downfield and for RB's to run through holes created by the push blocking techniques>>>>Therefore, give the edge to Parker because of the necessary skill and art of "blocking" which was definitely more demanding in his era of the NFL!!!!!
hi rob: the only suggestion i have, and this is 20-20 thinking, is to shorten the length of the contest. for example, holding more than 1 match-up per day. unfortunately, i have a short attention span, and the time from start to finish of over a month has exhausted my focus on the contest. while i have voted in the most of the early rounds, i have missed a few. hey, it is summer, and there are many activites vying for my time.
