How Long For Wrigley?

I've had the pleasure of watching a baseball game in Wrigley Field. To me, it's everything right with baseball.

I went to an afternoon game between the Cubs and the San Diego Padres during the 1998 season.

Although it was an afternoon game, the crowd was unbelievable. It had a play-off atmosphere.

That makes you wonder about the future of Wrigley. While watching the O's vs. Cubs game on Wednesday night, I noticed obstructed view seating and other nuances of the stadium that make it outdated.

I'm a huge fan of Wrigley, and I know it has to be replaced, someday. I'm just hoping that it's not a "corporate" decision. I hope baseball gets every single year out of Wrigley that's possible. It's truly a history lesson by itself.

There have been rumors of a possible major renovation on Wrigley Field very soon. They were talking about it yesterday on radio 670 The Score out of Chicago. The Cubs would have to play one full season at the White Sox' U.S. Cellular Field while the renovations are being done.

Rob, I too have had the pleasure to watch a few games in Wrigley and it would be a crime if they stopped playing ball there. The park is awesome, not so much for the sight-lines, but the "atmosphere". The location is great, the people are the probably the friendliest in the country and things to do after the games are very entertaing. The Cubs sell out just about every game with obstructed view. The paying public doesn't seem to mind the seating. I would bet you, if they built a "new" Wrigley Field the atmosphere wouldn't be close to what is now!

There have been a lot of articles about Tribune selling the Cubs and Wrigley Field. The most recent news was that a deal has just folded between Tribune and the public sports authority in Illinois. Wrigley is such a cash cow when compared to the money spent on upgrades and maintaining the place, because apparently, Tribune has spent next to nothing to keep it in good shape. Of course they have problems of their own since newspapers are going down fast and, even as I type this, they are slashing jobs and pages at The Baltimore Sun, which is one of many papers in their stable. Whoever buys the Cubs and Wrigley will almost certainly sell naming rights, so whatever happens, Wrigley Field will no longer be. But if they’re smart they will pour a big chunk of change into upgrading the place while still maintaining the character that makes it a shrine in Chicago. They still have obstructed view at Fenway don’t they? That’s probably still a tough ticket in Boston.
