I guess you have heard by now that Gus Gilchrist will not play basketball for the University of Maryland…ever.

Gilchrist was granted his transfer release by Maryland this afternoon and will look to continue--actually begin--his college career elsewhere.

Today’s news is just the latest blow to Gary Williams and his beleaguered program as Gilchrist was expected to be an instant impact player in the post. Gilchrist would have been eligible on December 22nd and would have stepped right into the starting lineup.

Earlier today, Kurt O’Neill of Press Box came on the program and reported that Gilchrist would not play this year due to the fact that he had lost his appeal to the ACC that would have made him eligible for the ‘08-’09 season. Kurt then speculated that Gilchrist would--probably--never play for the Terps.

Well, this report had me reeling and Maryland fans in meltdown mode.

It turns out that Kurt--or his source--was half-right.

Keith Cavanaugh of The Terrapin Times joined us later to say that there was no second appeal to the ACC that was denied. Gilchrist appealed to the league after his transfer and that is when the ruling came down that he would be eligible in December of ‘08 and would be classified as a sophomore.

However, during the interview, Keith did break the news that Gilchrist was meeting with Gary Williams to decide what his future--if any--with the program would be.

The more Keith spoke, the more he mentioned Gilchrist’s “advisors” and “his camp”. I used to host an internet recruiting show about a decade ago and I’ve spoken to more than a few “advisors” over the years. Let’s just say that sometimes “advisors” aren’t always giving the best advice…but I digress.

Anyway, I started to get a bad feeling during the conversation with Keith and those bad feelings were confirmed later in the afternoon

What does today’s decision mean for Gilchrist? Not to sound harsh, but I don’t care. Here is a young man on his way to his third school and he has yet to play a minute of college basketball. All I can do is wish him luck.

As for Maryland, as we said earlier, this is another punch in the stomach to a program that was on top of the college hoops world only six years ago.

Joey Cameron, a 6’8 forward, visits Maryland tomorrow. Cameron is a JUCO player who had stops at Auburn, Seton Hall, the French Foreign Legion , the Cubs etc…

So how was your day?

As a Terp alum this is very tough news. But sports do go in cycles and hopefully Maryland hoops is hitting rock bottom and will start its climb again after this season. It is tough to compete with Coach K and Roy Williams but I did not expect the program to fall this far. Then again, I didn't think the Caps would ever fall apart as bad as they did but now look at them climbing back up the ladder. Let's hope the Terps can do the same but there are no drafts in which you automatically get the #1 pick in college basketball.

Gary's reign is on it's last leg. I really do think this is his last season at College Park. He can not recruit, the Terps are barely competitive in the ACC, and we are losing to teams that are supposed to be our sure thing wins! We can enjoy a season of Greivis and Eric Hayes turn the ball over and shot and miss threes from half court! This is going to be an awful season, Shawn Mosley should head for the hills now! If I am wrong and if this team as constructed makes the NCAA Tourny Gary should get a decade long extention!

Hey Bob the bigger punch in the gut to me is WNST having Kurt O'neill on the air.I never thought I would see it Bob,never.I mean he is a MD alum who's favorite team is Duke.

Let's keep it civil. Actually, Kurt has lost over 100 pounds.
BH

Hey FC's lawyer,Gary can't recruit?By my count we have had five guys commit for 08 and none of them will play a minute. This isn't all on Gary

Re: As the Turtle Turns... By Joe of Bel Air on 6/3/2008 10:38 PM

I think this is the final nail in Gary's coffin. If Mosley doesn't make it, the Terps are looking at a 4-12 ACC record and a 13-17 overall record. Even if Mosley does get in I would be very surprised if the Terps make the tournament. Regardless, unless the Terps make it to the sweet 16, Debbie Yow needs to tell Garyland at the end of next season that he has 2 choices, announce his retirement or be fired. Maryland needs a younger more dynamic coach who can once again recruit the top talent just in this state. The problem is the more the Terps lose and miss the tournament the more recruits will turn their back on them. With Maryland going to the NIT in 3 of the last 4 years, we have already seen a steady flow of top talent from the Maryland/D.C. area leave to go elsewhere. Why would a top recruit want to go to Maryland to play in the NIT? As a Maryland alum I hate to say this but Gary has had a nice run but it is time to bring in new blood. This is similar to the Billick situation, while everyone can appreciate what Gary did in the past, major college sports is all about "what have you done for me lately", and in Gary's case the answer is not much.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when a school recruits guys that are poor quality off-the-court (Gilchrist, Evans), and guys that may not make the number (Mosley). I would prefer a bunch of Jin Soo Kims (or whatever his name is) and all-round quality guys that are sub-150 Rivals.com players than this stuff. I also don't think MD should recruit any more players with the last name Gilchrist.

bob you said that another juco player was coming to maryland to visit, shocker there. they are the kings of the juco transfer. i can count on one hand the transfers COACH K has brought in to the program. time to cut the cord on the sweaty coach who spends more time at the starboard in dewey then some 18 years living room. you have a great venue for hoops and they dont use it to their advantage. all i heard was gilchrist you terp fan were hang your hats on someone that never put on the jersey. what is mosley's deal. sat monster get him. can't spell N.I.T. without terrapins
