That’s what Orioles pitchers have to be thinking to themselves right now as they continue to pitch well but can’t seem to get any help from the offense. As I write this, the Orioles are being shutout through seven innings and trail the Rays 1-0 on the road. Jeremy Guthrie, who has been a hard luck pitcher this year, is tossing another strong game for Baltimore. But, unfortunately, he can’t get any support from the Orioles bats. Since scoring 12 runs in the series opener against the Yankees this past Tuesday, Baltimore has scored one run. Sorry, but that is unacceptable. It is this lack of consistent offense that will prevent the Orioles from playing .500 ball in 2008. Of course, that’s just my opinion. It was a pleasure talking to Roy Firestone today on the show. Roy loves his Orioles ( don’t we all?) and thinks they could wind up winning 85 games this year. I disagree with that total for the reason stated above. No surprise to hear the news today that Tyree Evans will not enroll at the University of Maryland and join the men’s basketball team. Signing Evans has been a controversial topic for sports fans over the last month or so here in the area. It became as national story when Luke Winn addressed it at www.si.com a few weeks back. Evans, who had not yet been accepted into Maryland by the admissions office, decided it was in the best interest of everyone involved to be released from his letter of intent. The young man is trying to get his life straightened out and here’s hoping that he can get that done. As far as how this affects Maryland hoops, this is another blow to the program. Signing Evans was a high-risk move that--to me--reeked of desperation. Today’s events , with Evans not matriculating to College Park, once again makes the program look bad in the eyes of the public. It seems as though there is no plan when it comes to recruiting and looking clueless is not the way to attract elite talent to your school. I’m not ready to say “ Fire Gary Williams” yet. But I think his program is approaching crisis mode and he needs to get this thing turned around pronto…..BH

Bob, I agree that the Evans signing was an act of desperation by Garyland. What has happened to the Terps since winning the title in 2002 is a travesty. All I know is Gary Williams has to be held responsible for the demise of the Terps' basketball team. 3 NITs in the last 4 years is totally unacceptable. Maryland should be in the top 20 every year and an invitation to the big dance should be automatic. If Maryland doesn't at least get to the tournament ( and I don't mean the NIT) then I hope Debbie Yow tells Gary that he can either retire or be fired but there has to be a change at the top.

Turning the program around is a tall order for Gary considering the shameful actions the AD.I really expected you to be able to see the entirety of the situation with Yow and Gary Bob.I mean you do have Frau Yow's number one mouthpiece on your show every week.Here are just a few of many many ways Yow has,through the press systematically Undermined Gary. 1) THe NIT hatchett job 2) Leaking the info on Shane Clarke to the press before giving the basketball guys a chance to correct the situation -- like Villanova did 3) Leaking info on Dave Neal's suspension 4) This last debacle with the Sun Basketball money has funded virtually the entire athletic department and enabled the myth that Yow is somehow a great AD.So now Gary wants to take a chance on one kid, yes ONE in his entire career and Yow runs to the press and goes into CYA mode.Look, Gary does not deserve a pass here. The reason we are even considering a recruit like this is because he has ignored recruiting for the past several years. Yow and her athletic department minions have been purposely leaking reports to the media for years about the program to publicly embarrass Gary. She wants him gone in the worst way and everyone even remotely associated with the university knows it.Like how Keith reported on his site that Bobby Maze wasn't coming before even Maze himself knew.I would love to see guys like Rick Maese do some investigation into the finances of the womens program and the millions lost there.There were people on your station who were very critical of the Ravens owner handling of the BB firing,the situation is similar a boss lying to the media at the expense of one of her coaches,shameful.Gary isn't untouchable Bob but he sure as hell deserves better then this.I have mixed feelings on the situation,Part me wouldn't blame Gary if he just walked(good luck getting a high profile replacement to work under that AD)but part of me can't stand to see Yow get what she has been secretly conniving for.
